Brief

Intellectual disability has no cure and in more than 75% of the cases, the cause remains unknown. Intellectually challenged persons are dependent on their caretakers for their physical, financial and mental wellbeing.

Their parents generally don’t get any kind of assistance from society or the government. Although disability is neither contagious nor progressive, they are frequently excluded from social engagements. Being restricted to a monotonous environment, barred from society, these children get little or no stimulation, which can frustrate them and make them engage in aggressive behaviour. This makes it a highly stressful job and an exhausting life for the parents. Especially because their health deteriorates due to advancing age while their special child only gets physically stronger.

Unfortunately, despite all possible efforts by the parents and caregivers, there comes a stage in life where it is extremely difficult to take care of them. Their parents also start dealing with the perennial problem “Who will take care of my child after me?”.

ADHAR, an Association of the Parents of the Intellectually Disabled Children, has been established exclusively to address the above problems faced by the parents and caregivers of adults with intellectual disability. We have created a safe, inclusive & stimulating environment at ADHAR, an Association of the Parents of the Intellectually Disabled Children, which has been established exclusively to address the above problems faced by the parents and caregivers of adults with intellectual disability. We have created a safe, inclusive & stimulating environment where they get to dictate how much support or space they need. Over the last 27 years, we have been joined by many enthusiastic volunteers, generous corporates, artists, medical experts who have given us hope & help to grow the Adhar Family where they get to dictate how much support or space they need. Over the last 27 years, we have been joined by many enthusiastic volunteers, generous corporates, artists, medical experts who have given us hope & help to grow the Adhar Family.

Addressing these long-term problems faced by Persons with Disabilities and their families is a major challenge. And we as a society need to ensure they are not alone in it. With community-led initiatives like Adhar, we are working towards securing their future. You too can make this world a better place for them by helping us reduce the stigma.

Background:

Intellectual Disability has been the most neglected area of disabilities on account of limited public awareness and lack of Government support. Intellectual Disability has no easy and permanent treatment in medical science. This condition cannot be cured but can be managed by constant monitoring and medicines. It’s an Intellectual disability and not a disease. An Intellectually Disabled person needs support throughout his / her life. It’s very difficult for him/her to become completely independent in terms of physical, mental & financial capabilities. Hence, the result is, old parents of these Intellectually Disabled persons are in nagging worry that “After us what? Who will take care of my special child?”
